Do Westies make good travel companions?
Indeed, Westies adore travelling and make exceptional travel companions! Westies are adventurous and confident little dogs which makes them comfortable and adaptable in a variety of settings. Westies are the perfect compact size for travelling and fit nicely in-cabin on commercial flights. Our Westies have and will always be our companions first and foremost, and as such they routinely travel with us and are accustom to flights, long road-trips, hotels, and campgrounds.
While scientific researchers proport that dogs have a memory of merely two-minutes, anyone who has owned a dog can attest to them being capable of far more complex thoughts than they have ever been credited for. We enjoy introducing our Westies to beautiful locations with sights and sounds for them to cherish.
We have affectionately nicknamed Jack our “Waterfall Inspector” as he has always been impressed by fast moving water, and thoroughly enjoys visiting the impressive Niagara Falls in Ontario.
Most recently our Westies made their way to Winnipeg, Manitoba to frolic in the countryside among the wheat fields.
Below we have shared a few of our recommendations for planning an adventure with your Westie:
Provide fresh water. We travel light and usually purchase bottled water along the journey to make sure that our Westies stay hydrated.
Feed familiar food. We maintain the same diet for our Westies on trips to ensure that they do not experience unexpected gastrointestinal changes which would make them uncomfortable.
Plan for frequent stops. We plan our trips to make sure that everyone can stretch their legs and have regular potty breaks.
Bring a towel. Westies adore the water and it is nice to have a towel ready to dry them off before hitting the road once again.
Plan pet friendly accommodations. Most hotels accept pets for a small fee.
Bring veterinarian records. If crossing international borders you may be asked to present proof of vaccinations.
