Diet

As a Registered Nurse I take great pride in researching and preparing diets which are nutritionally balanced and beneficial for each of our West Highlanders.

We carefully monitor and analysis ingredients in various dog foods available for purchase in Canada. In our experience pet food manufactures at times change their ingredients and formulas based on availability of products, and as such we do not recommend one specific brand. Our preferred diets contain duck and game birds, venison, lamb and occasionally fish as the primary source of protein. Our preference to these proteins is based on ease of digestion.

We understand that canines are omnivores much like a bear, and as such some “filler” ingredients such as sweet and regular potato, apples or pears, and even some grains can be incorporated into your dogs diet. Our Westies prefer a diverse diet which consists of dry kibble and both cooked and raw meals.

Our West Highland White Terrier puppies enjoy raw fruits and vegetables including carrots and apples while supervised. We also source beef bones from a local butcher shop and lean frozen steak to encourage healthy chewing during puppy teething stages.

Other chew treats which we recommend include bully-sticks, antler chews, and hooves which do not contain dye or artificial flavoring.

All dogs, including West Highland White Terriers, enjoy some treats as well! Those extra special goodies let them know how much they mean to us.

We love baking and cooking for our Westies and look forward to sharing recipes with you! Stay tuned for our Peanut Butter Honey Biscuits.
